Director of Planning and Development , City of Laurens
Overview The City of Laurens is seeking a motivated and visionary Planning and Development Director to lead long-range planning efforts, manage current development projects, and support economic revitalization initiatives in one of South Carolina’s most historic and charming communities.
Key Responsibilities • Oversee planning, zoning, and land use functions • Review and process development proposals and permit applications • Manage and update the City’s comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance • Coordinate with developers, property owners, and community stakeholders
Assist in grant writing and administration related to planning and development • Support downtown revitalization and historic preservation initiatives • Serve as staff liaison to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Historic Preservation Committee • Prepare agendas, maintain meeting minutes, and provide research and staff support for boards and commissions
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, geography, or a related field • At least 3 years of relevant experience in planning, zoning, or community development • Strong communication, analytical, and customer service skills • Familiarity with South Carolina planning statutes and best practices
Preferred Qualifications: Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Urban/Regional Planning (MURP) • AICP certification or eligibility • Experience in small-city or rural community planning
