Job Duties

limited to emergency rescue and fire suppression; performs search and rescue for trapped or injured persons; performs emergency medical and first aid services as needed; prepares reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned. Performs role of company officer in charge of all fire, rescue and emergency medical operations for assigned company or division delegation. Determines necessary resources to mitigate emergencies and relays information to the Fire shift commander.

Directs and participates in emergency operations on emergency scenes in accordance with departmental guidelines. Responsible for the health and safety of personnel within their operational control. Resolves emergency and non-emergency incidents on company level. Provides strategic and tactical command in absence of equal or superior officer. Supervises transport of apparatus and emergency personnel to incidents. Ensures apparatus placement, deployment of hose lines, ventilation, and rescue operations are completed to meet objective set by Fire Captain in accordance with departmental guidelines

Supervises and maintains assigned station, personnel, apparatus, and equipment. Ensures the routine maintenance of assigned company equipment/apparatus according to established standards and industry best practices. Maintains operational readiness for assigned company to include personnel, apparatus, and equipment. Oversees and participates in proper stocking and inventory of supplies and materials. Delegates responsibility to shift personnel as necessary to ensure effective operation of assigned company. Performs various administrative tasks.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required, with vocational or technical training in fire science or a related field; supplemented by three years of experience as an apparatus operator; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s). Must meet all qualifications for Fire Engineer classification. Must possess and maintain the following additional certifications or licensures: Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I, I-300 and I-400. May be required to obtain and maintain additional certifications as deemed necessary.
