Public Defender Part-Time, City of North Charleston
• Prepares cases for defense, performing such duties as diagnosing cases and negotiating with the Prosecutor, applying the law to facts of a criminal case to properly advise and defend qualifying indigent individuals charged with municipal charges in bench trials, jury trials, and or guilty pleas or dismissals. • Keep abreast of all new criminal legislation and case law that affects municipal courts and cases. • Receives and responds to difficult and sensitive client concerns and complaints. • Conducts trial work, oral, written arguments, case analysis, legal research, witness interviews
• Ability to provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers in the delivery of City services by following through on customer requests in a positive, courteous, timely, respectful and professional manner with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public. • Behave consistently regarding the City’s expectations for ethical conduct and present self in a professional and positive manner and accept responsibility for actions. Makes decisions in the best interest of the City. • Manages time and priorities effectively to achieve objectives.
• Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the City as they pertain to the performance of duties of the public defender. • Is knowledgeable in the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. • Has knowledge of current principles and practices of criminal law; courtroom / judicial procedures and processes; methods and techniques of legal research; established precedents, case law and sources of legal reference applicable to the role of a defense attorney.
• Requires a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school supplemented by one or more years of responsible experience in the field of law, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess and maintain membership in the South Carolina Bar Association. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
• Active Membership in the South Carolina Bar Association • Valid South Carolina Driver’s License
