The SC Municipal Insurance and Risk Financing Fund and SC Municipal Insurance Trust recommend that their members have their personnel policies reviewed by a labor attorney, at a minimum every five years. The Municipal Association of SC has updated its model employee handbook this year. The handbook can be used as a resource to help municipalities meet the technical requirements of state and federal employment laws.
Some important updates that members should be aware of are listed below.
- New Equal Employment Opportunity language dealing with changes in who is protected by anti-discrimination laws.
- New Anti-bullying Policy.
- Changes to the Drug Free Workplace Policy, which deals with the issue of CBD oil and other issues.
- A Family and Medical Leave Act poster has been included as an appendix.
A copy of the updated handbook can be found here. The SCMIRF employment and labor hotline offers members 10 free hours to discuss employment or labor issues with Kevin Sturm. For more information, contact Cindy Martellini at cmartellini@masc.sc or 803.933.1235.
