The Municipal Association of SC and Main Street South Carolina have released an on-demand video titled Economic Development Incentives: A Collaborative Process.
City and town officials often have a limited understanding of how federal, state and local tax credits can turn historic buildings in need of renovation from an apparent financial drain for a developer into a transformative development project. When these financial tools are overlooked by landlords, businesses and the development community, communities can struggle to reactivate commerce in their historic commercial districts.

The 25-minute video helps showcase the opportunities of national, state and local incentives to encourage the reuse of historic downtown properties. The new resource joins the Municipal Association’s Economic Incentives Toolkit, available at www.masc.sc (keyword: economic incentives toolkit).
The on-demand video was developed to highlight a catalytic preservation case study. The Savage Craft Ale Works in West Columbia serves as the case study for this on-demand film.
“South Carolina’s rural communities are always inquiring about innovative ways to maintain the historic character of their downtown buildings while welcoming the highest and best use of those buildings. This video release demonstrates the inherent possibilities of SC’s historic buildings,” said Jenny Boulware, manager of Main Street SC. “Their creative reuse reinforces our state’s historic districts as invaluable, unique destinations.”
