SC Municipal Insurance and Risk Financing Fund has welcomed the Town of Chapin, effective as of February 1, 2024 and the Town of Smyrna, effective as of March 14, 2024.
SC Municipal Insurance Trust welcomed the Town of Chapin, effective as of January 1, 2024.

Leslie Nash Joins Risk Management Services as SCMIRF Claims Adjuster
Work Experience: Leslie Nash has over 10 years of experience in the insurance industry working in customer service, underwriting and claims at a small insurance agency and Seibels. Most recently, she worked as a senior liability adjuster at Farmers Insurance. Previously, she worked as an insurance agent selling Medicare Advantage plans as well as a medical assistant in the Charlotte area.
Hometown: Mint Hill, North Carolina
Hobbies: She enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her family.
Spotlight on Risk Management Services’ Board Members
SCMIRF Board Member Chief Kevin Cornett
Elected in 2022, Chief Kevin Cornett has served on the SC Municipal Insurance and Risk Financing Fund board for two years. He has been the police chief for the City of Isle of Palms since 2019.
Cornett previously served as police chief for the Town of Springdale from 2012 to 2019 and held many law enforcement roles at the City of Columbia. He is a graduate of the 270th session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy. He has a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and Management and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice with a focus on leadership and management. Cornett has also attended and completed the Narcotics Commanders School, Law Enforcement Commanders School, FBI Carolina Command College, Federal Emergency Management Agency Advanced Public Information Officer course, and the Municipal Association’s Risk Management Services Risk Management Institute. He is currently enrolled in the Local Government Leadership Institute.
Cornett serves on the SC Law Enforcement Training Council. He is the first vice president for the SC Chapter of the FBI National Academy Association and serves on the board for the SC Police Chiefs Association as the Lowcountry Representative. He also serves as a member of the speakers’ bureau for Lighthouse for Life, where he presents trainings on human trafficking awareness. He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the SC Law Enforcement Officers Association.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, fishing — or feeding the fish, to be more accurate — exercising and reading.
SCMIT Board Member Mark Aakhus
Elected in 2023, Mark Aakhus has served on the SC Municipal Insurance Trust board for one year. He has been the town administrator for the Town of Edisto Beach since 2023. He previously served as the assistant town administrator from 2019 to 2023. He also worked as the real estate manager for the City of Charleston from 2012 to 2019.
Aakhus obtained a Bachelor of Science in Management from Clemson University and a Master of Public Administration from the College of Charleston. He is also a graduate of the Local Government Leadership Institute.
He is a member of the South Carolina Beach Advocates Board and a council member of the Edisto River Basin.
In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family, going to the beach, mountain biking and working in his yard and on his house.
